Depolarizing Perception: Challenges of Embarking Mental Health

There are many misconceptions about mental illness that more often than not encourage prejudice. It is high time that we overcome all those feelings and believe in mental health as we believe in any other health issues existing as an important aspect of life. Within this context, we shall see the reasons why mental health should be embraced and, above all, practiced without fear of stigma.

Mental illness includes a wide range of health conditions that impact a person's cognitive function. These may involve mood, cognition, or behavior. And like any other disease, having such an illness can be distressing and incapacitating. It can be painful as well. Think about how you would feel if you caught a cold or flu; you become lethargic, and you have to go into ’hibernation’ so that the body restores to its active form. That too applies in the case of mental health. These disorders should be managed with care and compassion.

Why Does Stigma Matter?

When someone is suffering from a mental illness, oftentimes, accentuating stigma is like being placed under a dark cloud; all are under intense pressure. It creates a sense of alienation and makes people feel misunderstand. There are cases when a person having difficulties withdraws from the world because they do not wish to burden others with their issues. And then help does not come, and symptoms become more severe; perhaps even a crisis will occur. It is similar to being in the middle of a maze and trying to locate an exit. It is hard, if not impossible, without help. It is through assistance to those in need that the end of stigmatization and help-seeking encourages those thanks, which interweaves their support into rehab.

The importance of talking about mental health.

Looking at mental health issues from the perspective of being able to talk about them can look life-changing. If one person speaks out about their experience, then it encourages another person to do the same. In relation, if you got to know that your friend was going through a hard moment, would you be willing to discuss your difficulties? They would be far more likely to do so. This is how conversations enable interaction and enable relations. Everybody should be encouraged to speak about mental attacks in such a way that there are no stops to it.

Dismantling Stereotypes.

There are a multitude of beliefs concerning mental health that are untrue. For instance, some assume one has to be'strong’ to cope with issues of the mind. That is far from the truth! Just as we would not call a person weak for the loss and dysfunction of a limb such as a leg, we can avoid casting judgment on someone suffering from mental health issues. Everyone has certain wars to wage, and some are waged in the mind.

The Narratives That Bring Change.

Tales can also serve other purposes. In most cases, these are aided by public figures themselves; when these people reveal their inner challenges and roars, such campaigns become successful. To illustrate, both Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Lady Gaga have shared their experiences, narrated their stories, and inspired others. It is a wave once one story is shared, people cannot resist sharing stories, leading to a flooding effect of compassion.

Accessibility of Help Should Be Emphasized.

A lot of people have to deal with barriers in one way or another before they get the assistance that they require. Access to mental health services is often limited or very high. Consider, for example, searching for a missing shoe inside the wrong wardrobe. Mental health services have to be redesigned and made available. People are entitled to information and treatment as they would to any other form of illness.

Building an Enabling Environment.

Communities are also important areas where stigma can be counteracted. They can be schools, workplaces, or even social groups that encourage the sharing of mental health issues as a normal thing. And constant variations of the power structure dynamic can also help. This is similar to a buddy system; it supports individuals knowing that there is someone they can turn to and that person will not scorn them.

The importance of empathy.

There is no doubt that empathy is instrumental in combating stigma. Without imposing one’s opinions or viewpoints on the other person, proper support can be provided. It is about being with someone rather than looking at him/her from a distance. Let me know what the issue is, care about the person, and show authentic interest. There are times when just the thought of someone who cares is enough for it to change almost miraculously.

Conclusion: Come forward and act!

We each one of us can begin the process of destigmatization of mental illnesses. Let us normalize the conversations about mental health and sharing experiences. Where there is empathy and support, there will be no more silence about mental health issues. It’s time for the heavy snowscreen of stigma to be vanquished and the sun to shine again. We can rewrite the story, and this time, I hope no one has to ever stand alone.
